Accessing Netflix with new Apple TV remote

Purchased Apple TV steaming device to replace ROKU - did I make a huge mistake? I've followed the instructions to add existing Netflix, Hulu, ESPN accounts -- nothing is working.

nothing is working.

Please detail in smaller steps what you did, so that we may get some understanding of where exactly it goes wrong.

E.g. for Netflix: Download the Netflix app from the on-device App Store. Then find the tile for the Netflix app on the Home Screen. Launch the app by navigating to it and have it highlighted, then select it (click the center of the clickpad). Use your Siri Remote with Apple TV - Apple Support

Next, click the ‘Sign In’ button. Choose to use your mobile phone as aid to make it simpler, or else choose to use just the remote. When using a phone, scan the QR code, which should open the Netflix app on mobile with a matching code, and confirm there. When using the remote, sign in with your email and password for your Netflix account. Typing on screen is somewhat cumbersome, so I prefer the phone method.
