Apple TV voice remote, not controlling other apps with voice like it used to

The newest Apple TV voice remote used to control all of my other apps with voice control such as fast-forward rewind ahead two minutes back one minute, etc. suddenly it stopped working with voice. Did Apple do something that broke the feature or is the remote defective?
