Trackpad will not select and highlight text when I click and hold the pointer's position after Sonoma 14.4.1 update

I cannot highlight or select text within documents, on the internet or anyplace with my trackpad. I can position the pointer and insert or delete text at that place but cannot select a letter, word or phrase using my trackpad. This nightmare started with Sonoma 14.4.1 updates. I have been searching online for solutions and have even started my MacBook Pro M3 in safe mode and nothing seems to work.
