Major Problem iphone 4. I can hear them, they cannot hear me.

This has been happening for the last 3 days. I make or receive a call on my iPhone 4 and within seconds the party on the other line cannot hear me at all. I hear them perfectly but they cannot hear me. Sometimes it happens right away sometimes it takes several seconds but my voice completely drops out. This happens 50 to 80% of the time.

Went to the apple store and they checked it by using the recorder app which worked fine and then by making a call which also worked fine. They did not perform any diagnostics. I'm on the road all day and my business depends on my phone. I am now afraid to make calls for fear of the person on the other side losing me mid sentence or not hearing me at all. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. This happens whether I'm on speaker, mic or bluetooth.

I upgraded to the latest software on Sunday and to no avail. Am I alone? 32gb iPhone 4 4.0.2 software. Any ideas?

Could this be iPhone problem or ATT?

Mac Pro 8 Core 2.8 GHZ 3TB External, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I hate to ask but do you have a case on your iPhone? What you are describing sounds a lot like some of the tests where they have given it the death grip without a case and had the signal cut out, not be able to hear the other party etc. Yours reminds me of a test that CNET did.

you are not alone this has happened to me too, I had to get a replacement, I think it is a microphone problem

Yes, I do have a case on it. Antenna is not the issue as I hear the other party perfectly.

Hi
This has also been an issue with my iphone 4, 4.0.1 also.
It worked well for a week but then the person I am talking to can no longer hear me or my voice sounds muffled. This seems to be an intermittent problem but very frustrating. If using speaker phone it works well, for now.
I went into the Orange store and the guy said he has heard of the problem but it's very rare. He told me that Apple can do a diagnostic to see if it is a problem they can fix.
Will let you know if this works.

It sounds like you might be having the proximity sensor issue (you can search the long threads). But basically, the sensor screws up and folks report that their phone is on mute (or dials out while they are talking on the phone). The next time it happens, check to see if the mute is on.

Thanks for the responses. The mute is not on. I am constantly checking this. It also cuts out when i'm on bluetooth or speaker. No output whatsoever around 50-60% of the time!

Try inserting headphones and then removing. Otherwise try hard reset (hold down home and power button until phone switches off and apple logo re-appears).

I have the exact same problem - people often cannot hear a thing I am saying. Brand new iPhone 4. The microphone is definitely working because I can use voice control to call them. I hear them perfectly well - they just don't hear me. Some calls work perfectly well. I though it might be a loose connection but I started using voice control to initiate call and still they cannot hear me.

Apple, is this hardware problem or software problem? It definitely is a problem.

A lot of people have had the problem (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12444818#12444818) so it does seem to be some flaw with the phone itself...

I'm from Brazil and I'm having the same problem!!! =/
I can hear people perfectly but they can't hear me!

I've already turned it off and on, did a hard reset, reset and nothing works. And seems that nobody found a fix for it!

It's REALY frustrating to have a phone that can do everything but call!
