Where Do Downloaded Software Updates Go?

As I understand it, one type of downloaded files are either saved on the desktop (by default) or in some other folder/location if specified already. But regarding the updates which are downloaded through software updates, where are they stored? I want to do this because I would like to get rid of downloading the updates everytime I re-install the original software/OS X after a fresh install.

You have several choices when you install software through Software Update. I believe the default is to just install the software. In this case the file will be downloaded, the software installed, and the download will be deleted.

There are two more options in Software Update's Update menu. If you choose "Download Only" or "Install and Keep Package", the appropriate action will take place (either the software will be downloaded only or downloaded and installed). The downloaded file can then be found in the directory /Library/Packages. That is the Library folder at the root of your hard drive. As far as I know, there is no reason why the downloaded files must remain in the Packages folder. You can move them anywhere you wish to store them.
