How do I play my iTunes library on my iPad?

I have a few thousand songs in my iTunes library which is hosted in the cloud. Only a few songs show up on my iPad - looks like maybe recent ones that I bought in the iTunes Store. How do I get access to my entire library on my iPad (it’s a recent model, purchased a few months ago). I also have Home Sharing on and I am logged into the same Apple ID as my iTunes library.
