Fixing or Buying a new iMac?

I have 3 iMacs in my printshop, but the oldest one is the most loved, it's a 27 inch late 2013 iMac. Yesterday, it suddenly got these colored bars on the display. I can't do anything with it because I only see these stripes on the display (BUT) I can log in to this iMac through Remote Desktop from another iMac and I see everything fine, I can open programs, send projects to print, etc. In Remote Desktop I don't see any stripes, but these stripes are there, on the display. A friend of mine (who knows about this) says that if this is the case, then it is not a software or motherboard or video board problem, it is possible that the display has said "caput", "finitto" "bye bye”.

So, the question is, should I change only the display or buy a newer iMac?

What do you think, is my friend right or is there a way to fix this?

Thank you in advance for any opinion.

+1 replace it. What is likely wrong is the GPU which is integrated onto the main logic board and is not replaceable. It is also quite obsolete at 11 + years so my 02 cents is to replace it. I would strongly consider a new Mac mini with a 27" display, you will get far more power than a 2013 iMac and you can select the 27" display you want. For about $1500-$2000 you can have a very nice solution.

UPDATE 04-10-2024 The old iMac came back to life

This is sincerely very weird in deed!

In my post I say that my 2013 iMac had the screen with colored stripes and I got advice from the experience of many of you that I really appreciated. I was ready to buy a newer iMac, when it SUDDENLY fixed itself. I didn't do anything special, I just ran the Clean My Mac program and also the OniX program, I did a PRAM reset, and the Disk Utility (that reported that everything was OK) but everything was still as bad, then I disconnected it from the power all weekend and when I reconnect it on Monday, Voila, the old iMac came back to life and no longer has the lines on the screen and I can use it as before, but I'm afraid, I don't trust it anymore.

What do you think it could be?

Apple refurbs are an even better option. They come with a full one-year warranty and qualify for AppleCare+ extended coverage.

Refurbished Mac - iMac - Apple

Over half our family's considerable inventory of Apple products are Apple-direct refurbs. All have been superb performers. Zero cosmetic issues either.

The Apple online store is the ONLY reliable source of true Apple refurbs. Any others advertised as "factory refurbished" should be taken with a ship-load of salt! One person bought an iMac represented to be factory refurbished from an auction site. He posted here wondering why Apple would use duct tape to secure the display!

OWC is usually forthcoming in saying they do their own refurbishment in-house, making them among the few who are honest about it. I like OWC and do a lot of business with them but get my refurbed hardware from Apple web-direct.

Could be degraded Capacitors, heat, or dust...

Have you blown the dust out of the intakes lately?

What temperatures does this App report? Especially the GPU.

This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.

Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

Hi BDAqua, thank you for your comment!

As a matter of fact, nope! I don't even know how to blow the dust on an iMac. I used to do so on my super old Power Mac (remember those?) many years ago, and it was an easy task but not for an iMac.

I don't even know (sorry) what app does report the temperature, but this iMac is use only to output Quark projects to our printer, no heavy tasks are made on this computer anymore since it is a little old and slow, comparing it with the other 2 new iMacs we have. I make this iMac to shut down automatically every night at 10:00pm and start also automatically every weekday at 7:00am

Regarding MacFansControl app, I am exploring it, to see if it is worth to buy it.

Thank you again for your help and advice!
