Password or passcode?

I’m very confused. Please explain the difference between “passcode” and “password” and how they are used. So many explanations I look at assume I know what they are talking about, and what screen and option they are referring to.

Please explain like I am brand new to Apple.

I will make this as simple as possible for you and me to remember and understand. These terms are not set by Apple but have been around in the computing industry for decades.

A Passcode is normally used to lock and unlock devices. A Password is normally associated with User IDs, files and documents. That is how I manage to maintain the difference between the two. I also understand that these terms (Password and Passcode) are often used interchangeably and that adds more to the confusion.

Not sure whether I have cleared this up for us or added more matter to the state of confusion. Ha!

Some people also use "passcode" to refer to a numerical code such as what you use at the ATM and "password" to refer to something with letters in it. I think most people use the terms interchangeably.

In what situations is this causing you a problem? If you explain what you're specific issue is, someone can most likely provide a better explanation.
