While updating from Catalina to Monterey, this installation failed error occurs. My startup disc has sufficient space. How would I go about this? Help is appreciated.

You can try the method you mentioned via Recovery Mode.
The unknown is if it will pull the Catalina upDate or bypass and download either macOS 11 Big Sur or possibly macOS 12 Monterey
I would lean towards bypass Catalina and going directly to Monterey

Reinstalling Catalina through recovery mode worked perfectly. After that, the missing (security) update was installed, and then I upgraded to Monterey. These three steps have all gone very smoothly. Thank you PRP_53 for your help with this.

The First Image indicates an upDate has failed which is Not the same as an upGrade
What update was offered for macOS 10.15 Catalina that has failed ?
Suggest resolving the Catalina upDate before moving forwards to the upGrade to Monterey
