Can't get Home Sharing to work on an iPad

Hi. I have a Mac Mini containing 115GB of my MP3 and ALAC music in an Apple Music Library.

I am trying to access this on an iPad (iPadOS 17.4.1) using home sharing, following the guidance here, but I just get the loading icon which disappears after either a couple of minutes (first try) or a few seconds (subsequent tries):

I also get the same when I try to access it in my iPhone (iOS 17.4.1)

Is Home Sharing able to share my own music or is it just for purchases from iTunes and/or an active Apple Music subscription?

If it can be used to share my own music, any suggestions of what to do?
