I made a shortcut for an app and added it to the home screen. I deleted the shortcut in the app, but the app on the home screen is still there. I did the hold-on thing until the apps started shaking and there was no delete button. Please tell me how to get rid of it.

You could try to reset the Home Screen and apps to their original layout :
Any folders you’ve created are removed, and apps you’ve downloaded are arranged alphabetically after apps that came with your iPhone. So you'll have to customize your home screen again.
Move the app shortcuts you want to remove to a new Home Screen page, then delete the page:
I did what you said and the shortcuts are still there.
