How do I fix greyed out "always show tab bar"?

The option "always show tab bar" is greyed out. It makes me crazy not to have the tabs visible, and I can't stand it anymore.

I have tried restarting safari, restarting the computer, disabled extensions, erased history and buffer. But nothing helps.

Is there a fix for this issue?

I have Sonoma 14.4.1, Safari version 17.4.1.

Thank you in advance!

Solved!

Very easy. I discovered the button "always show the toolbar in full screen", and that solved the issue. Well, yes, I must have accidentaly shut that off. I feel somewhat stupid....

Thanks for the update and don't feel stupid. Your question was very articulate and provided all the information needed for a successful resolution. Sometimes we will see a simple question followed by a rant that they are never going to buy another Apple product again. Once they realize that it was a simple solution with something they had changed, I would suspect feeling somewhat stupid would be warranted. That is not the case for you and it is also helpful to others who may have had the same problem.
