how to make words darker
The words are displayed in a light gray and I'd like them to be closer to black

Wondering where you are viewing the light gray text ... (eg, in a document you're writing, or in a particular app)
Eg: Format text in documents with fonts on Mac - Apple Support
says:
More info: Use colors in documents.
Else to change a displayed color:
You may want to experiment with the color filters
See how to: Use color filters on Mac - Apple Support
Eg: says:
"You can apply a colour filter to adjust the display colors for color vision deficiencies or to tint the entire screen to make it easier to read text.
All the best :-)
