Can I change my Apple ID to another email or just a name without losing stuff ?

I created my Apple ID (which is an email) over ten years ago and I use it for iCloud. My actual ID is the email. This email account is old has been hacked and I need to change my Apple ID but I am afraid I will lose everything with this ID. I have the extra storage with documents, pictures, work documents....EVERYTHING. I have done research and some people say I will lose everything if I change my Apple ID to another email address. Others say I will not. Is it possible to change my Apple ID to a completely different email without losing stuff? Does the Apple ID itself need to be an email address or can it be my name? Any clarification is greatly appreciated.

I think the confusion comes because some people, instead of changing the existing Apple ID to a new email address, create an entirely new Apple ID. That is almost never a good idea.

No, you can't change it to something that is not an email address.
