Apple Music does not forward/go back with song selection with steering wheel controls or air pod controls

Today while working out, I noticed that my air pods would not allow me to skip songs while listening to Apple Music. When I got into my vehicle, I noticed that my steering wheel controls would not allow me to skip songs either. Only way to forward/go back on my song selection is to hit the forward/back arrow on the Carplay screen or on my Iphone or Apple Watch but would not work with the steering wheel controls. No other settings on my phone have changed at all. Running latest version of IPhone IOS. Tried turning my car off and starting it up again to see if it would clear this issue with no luck. Steering wheel controls work fine when I go back to the factory setting as the steering wheel controls will change the radio stations just fine. For this to happen with both my air pods and car play make me feel that this is something wrong on the Apple Music end.
