External monitor recognized in Display setting but stays dark

My wife's Intel MB Air works fine with the external monitor we have but when I connect it to mine, my screen reverts to the desktop view but the external monitor stays dark. The external's icon shows up in the Display setting so it's obviously shaking hands with the Air. Is there some trick I don't know?

Why is my MacBook Air not displaying on the external monitor? At the Apple store yesterday the "genius" connected an external monitor to my M1 MacBook Air and was able to "see" that my processor, etc. was functioning as usual. The Air display is black and has been determined to be dead. I bought an Acer monitor, hooked it into my USB3 port with an HDMI to the monitor, I can't get my Air to show on the monitor. Since I can't use any prompts (Settings, etc.) that would otherwise be displayed on the Air panel, how do I get the Air to talk to the Acer just suing the keypad? I'm not sure what magic the "genius" employed to do that in the store. All I get on the Acer screen are settings menus. [Re-Titled by Moderator]

MacBook Air screen blank, unable to connect to external monitor Hi My mac air with model no:A2337 display started with blur and eventually died and I want to connect to external monitor to use the device. I am not able to do that. Any help would be appreciated as I am left with no clue how to work with this laptop when screen is blank. I wanted to replace display but it is costing lot of money so trying to workout for some more time before I replace original screen of the laptop.
