I am trying to set up a new iPhone 15, did your updates work in the end, It has been preparing update for nearly 3 hours now?
Having the same problem setting up new 15 pro. Disappointing start to a new Apple product which is not cheap!
I finally got on my PC, downloaded iTunes, plugged phone in, downloaded. 17.4.1 (7.66GB!), which took approx 15mins, it transferred to
hpone in about another 15min. Then had to reset the phone and transfer data from old phone. About another 45mins later the phone is 90% useable. Typical app download stuff to finish and sign-ins, etc
All in, this was over a 13hr adventure.
Note, I have 1gb/s internet with wifi speeds of over 650mb/s, so that was never an issue.

As a resolution, I got around the software update hanging by running the update through my macbook.

Started the setup for new iPhone 15 last night and the update is still processing…. WTH!!! It won’t let me set up without the update so the phone is useless atm. Comin apple let’s get this right
I fixed this issue. See below. I had this same problem last night. Was on the phone with T-Mobile for 1.5 hours and wasn’t able to get ahold of Apple Support.
moving from a IPhone 13pro max to a 15 pro max. I attempted the update wirelessly but kept getting stuck on either “requesting update” or “preparing update”. Would never move forward.
stop all the updates over the air. Plug your new phone into the computer and update it via iTunes or Apple MacBook. This will directly force it to your phone.
saved my butt.
My new iPhone 15 Pro was stuck on "preparing update" forever yesterday. I cancelled it and started over, and now it's stuck on "1 second remaining" also. I would definitely like to skip the update so I can use my new phone!
Has it worked for anyone? If so how long did it take? I recently got a replacement 15 pro max through apple care, trying to transfer my old phone over but it’s stuck on the update for 3 hours now. Not sure what to do, I’m going to have to leave work soon which means I’ll no longer have wifi for the update… I also need to send my old phone off tonight…. Ugh apple pls fix this
Having same issue on 15 pro max just box opened trying to update with the old phone 17.4 so I can transfer to the new phone but it's been like 3 hours from and and still it is stucking on 1 sec preparing update and requesting upgrade now trying without any login with my sim and my wifi shows me 59 minutes and Extremly slow Waiting for the final result hope it will he updated.💔🥺
This is a known issue when activating new devices. The iOS update process has some incompatibility with the transfer service to new device process. The solution is to upgrade your new device to 17.4.1 without trying to transfer data or service from your old device. You can bypass the transfer and go to the iOS update. After the update completes, reset the new device to factory settings, cycle the old device and then transfer the service. (Worked for me... had to spend an hour at the Verizon store to get this solution.)
Purchased a brand new iPad yesterday and same issues. Unable to proceed with iPad setup without taking iOS 17.4.1. Started updating over wifi over 10 hours ago. Finally, this morning, connected to pc and Apple devices. Still says over two more hours. This is a major and unacceptable glitch. Have been a faithful Apple user for many years. Reconsidering that choice now.
same here been on the 17.4.1 update on my new `Pro max for >40 mins
Same it's taking hours
Same for me on new iPhone SE - surely this is not normal - now over 4 hours!!
Same. Mine has been preparing overnight and still not done. It won’t let me set up the new phone without the update.
Force update it via your computer. It seems to be the only way.
