It is sometimes nessecary for the setup to use a wired keyboard. If it is a Magic Keyboard second generation or newer, please use the charging cable to use It as a wired keyboard for the setup

If it is a first gen magic keyboard on batteries please use another wired keyboard in order to go through the setup

If the keyboard came with your iMac (i.e., if your iMac is brand new) it should have been already setup and should connect when you turn on the keyboard power switch. The battery is rechargeable.

You don't say how you checked the keyboard.

If it isn't connection, try the instructions in Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac - Apple Support

If it won't connect, see information in If you can't connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac - Apple Support
