Ipad lost space after turning on icloud photo backup!

Hello! I recently tried to backup my ipad’s photos using icloud because i was down to only 3 gb left of free space, but after seemingly backing up my ipad photos, my free storage jumped from 3gb available to a mere 500mb available!

I was under the impression that uploading my ipad photos to the cloud would save local space, not fill it up!!! I have also noticed that my ipads gallery is full of photos from my iphone, since they are connected to the same apple id.

Because of that, i turned off the shared library but the iphone photos stayed. I’m not sure if they are the culprit behind my shrinked storage, considering they were stored in my icloud account.

I urgently needed the space so i turned off icloud backup but the photos from my iphone remained on my ipad and my storage is still 500mb from being completely filled up. I don’t know what to do!

That brings me to what i did just now:

I accessed my ipad storage through general>storage and it said that my photos app is taking up a mere 2gb. Then i noticed that under the “Recommendations” tab, there was an option for me to ‘review personal videos’ and delete them. They were apparently taking up 10gb of space despite the fact that my photos app takes up 2gb of my local ipad storage. I looked through the videos and they’re all videos i’ve taken on my iphone and uploaded to the cloud. I tried deleting an unimportant one and i got this prompt: “This will permanently delete the selected video. This action cannot be undone.” and the options were ‘Delete from this ipad’ and Cancel. I figured that doing this would delete the video from my ipad but the ‘permanently deleted’ wording threw me off. I deleted it anyways and checked to see if it still existed on my ipad. it was still there! i checked my phone too and it didn’t get removed from my phone either. So i tried doing the same with a couple more videos and i got the same result. None of them were deleted.

I’ve never had this problem before with my iphone. I always backed up my photos to icloud and that was it. It’s worth mentioning that i cannot access my ipad photos from my iphone so i have no idea why my iphone photos are showing up on my ipad now that the share library option is off.

So my questions are;

  1. Does deleting videos using ‘Review personal videos’ do anything at all?
  2. What happened to my ipads storage? Why did turning on icloud backup fill up the storage?
  3. How do i get rid of my iphone photos showing up in my ipad gallery? I turned off the shared library but they’re still there. I am unable to do my job because i don’t have time to comb through thousands of personal photos to find my work related photos.

Not sure if this information is needed, but the ipad is a 9th generation ipad and my phone is an iphone 13. I have plenty of space on my icloud so I don’t think that’s the problem.

I am so frustrated, i don’t know what to do. I need the space on my ipad for my job and the tool that was supposed to help me save local space rendered me completely unable to do my job!!! I do graphic design and being able to quickly and easily access my gallery is very important to me. Please help me 😞💔
