iPhone 11 back button not working in iMessage app

Hello all, has anyone or anybody ever experienced/ experiencing difficulties hitting the back button in an iMessage? When I enter an iMessage and send a text, it’s almost as if the back button arrow enlarges and when I press on it I can not go back to my message list. The arrow remains enlarged and cannot be pressed until another text comes in from a different contact and then the arrow becomes small again and I can go back to my message list. See the picture for what I mean by enlarged. I have done the most recent update. Restarted my

phone, changed font size, I cannot swipe to go back, restarting the iMessage app doesn’t help, it just takes me back to the last message. I have to literally turn my

phone horizontally just to switch between contacts and it is so annoying. Any help would be appreciated.
