Mac OS Sonoma 4.4.1 on 2020 Mac Mini M1, with a 49” LG monitor
The volume keys worked fine since the system was purchased a couple years ago but quit working the other day. Have tried everything I could think of but am willing to start over with the basics & obvious fixes if someone would kindly guide me. Thanks in advance...

Is this volume for the wired speakers or Bluetooth speakers? I have had issues with my M2 laptop where my I can not use the volume keys on the laptop's keyboard to adjust my Bluetooth earbuds sometimes.....all I see is the prohibited symbol when pressing a volume key. Disconnecting my Bluetooth earbuds by putting them into their charging case for a minute, then pulling them out again solves this problem for me. I have no idea why macOS gets stuck like this though as I have not bothered to investigate.
I've never had any problems adjusting the volume for any built-in speakers with the laptop.
Have you tried restarting the Mac Mini?
If the speakers are in the display, then have you tried to disconnect & reconnect the display?

How is the monitor connected? Can you snapshot the Output Sound options please?
Thanks for kindly replying. The speakers are built into the display. Yes, have tried restarting the Mac Mini.
Hadn’t thought of dis- and reconnecting the display but did that just now. Same result, so I tried shutting the system down, dis- and reconnecting display as well as the power source for the Mac Mini, and rebooting. No change. I can control the volume via controls on the display or within apps that have a volume toggle or slider but the keyboard volume keys don’t work.

Thanks for these pointers. The first one appeared to be the most relevant to my issue. I hadn't tried turning Bluetooth off and on before but did that just now. The problem persists.
