Maild issues
Maild seems to always be running, even when I don't have a mail app open. I use Thunderbird for a mail
client. Does maild need to run? If not, how can I disable it?

I use both Apple Mail and Thunderbird. I just closed both and checked maild process in Activity Monitor. Still running. Then I issued the STOP process button and maild came back immediately.
From this, my assumption is that it's required by macOS for some reason. It really isn't using much in terms of system resources so why bother with it?
To illustrate the observations by @Randall_2023
Mail is presently 100% Closed
Looking in Activity Monitor >> View >> View ALL Processes
The amount of CPU processing is so small, it is almost worthless to mention
