editing documents in Files on iphone

I can store docs written on my Mac which is synced in icloud with Files on my iphone. I would like to edit them - that is write and save while I am away from the Mac desktop. How do I do this, they appear as read only?

iPhone SE, iOS 17

I don't use Word myself but rather the Pages application from Apple, which is its counterpart. With Pages, I have a folder named "Pages" on iCloud Drive where I store all my Pages documents.

In the Files application on the iPhone, I go to that folder and open my Pages documents. On the Mac, I go to the iCloud Drive location (in the sidebar) and do the same. Documents edited either on the iPhone or the Mac are automatically synchronized and modifications I make on one device are propagated to the other device.

thing was I could speak edits into the iphone while out walking - so I didn't forget them! And i also like when I stop for a rest to sit (coffee shop) and edit. Back to notebook and pencil and update the doc when I return. It is nice to be able to read and reflect, but the hassle of switching from place to place and not sure what I have altered where now seems far too distracting to the thought process

If you can give me a simple step by step routine for going from doc in Files to Word - to save - to save where in Files - and alterations hopefully synced ??? It might work
