How long does mail rebuild take for a mailbox with 1000s of emails in it and how do we know when it is done?

Search on my mailbox was not always finding emails, and I was resorting to my phone. So I pressed rebuild. Now I don't see messages. I presume it is rebuilding its index, but I don't know when it is done. How long does it take? I have years of emails sitting in Mail.

Thank you,

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.6

I have about the same as you. It has taken a few hours and when I check Activity it gives me the progress, but

the Downloading new Messages isn't making progress, the message number keeps growing - probably because of all the junk I get, it is not keeping up with them. The existing Message Download is still at it - almost done. And the Connecting hasn't moved. Do I force quit it or do I wait?

Ah, we might be onto something, possibly a malformed eMail on the Server...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If still no good Disconnect from the Internet, then start Mail, look for the last rec'd eMail.

Quit Mail & login to your WebMail in a Browser, if possible delete any later eMails there after the last rec'd one on the Mac.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

You don't have anything stuck in the Outbox do you?
