So when the screen comes up EVERY TIME I CONNECT MY IPHONE and telling me it's going to backup my phone - there is a (AUTOMATICALLY SYNC WHEN THIS IPHONE IS CONNECTED) check button.
WHY WHEN I UNCHECK THIS BUTTON the setting in not changed?
So annoying. Anyone have a clue?

You need to click the "Apply" button (bottom right) after changing that setting. Note that the setting is only for the synchronization; you cannot prevent the backup from being done when you connect the iPhone.

That is odd. The Apply button appears as soon as I change that setting (in the example below, I had unchecked the setting first and checked it again):
I'm not sure what to advise at this point. Would rebooting the Mac help? Another option would be to turn off the Mac, and restart it in safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support. Do a test in safe mode and restart the Mac normally.
Indeed, even if you un-check the "automatically sync", the next time you sync there will be an attempt at backing up. It doesn't seem to remember the setting. - This issue with automatic back-ups has been going on for years and does not seem to get resolved.
APPLY does not light up to be able to click on it.
Any other ideas?
