MacBook Pro M1 2020 swap insides

I bought several M1's when launched for my company. One of them has the stage lights screen problem and one of the usb c ports stopped working . The repair costs outweigh the value. The other one is working fine but it was used by an employee who set it up with no Company Admin and I can't access it, they have left the company. Is there a way of moving all the data from the damaged one to the locked one, I remember years ago you could use one as a target and transfer with a cable. The other option is to with the insides from one to the other which would sort the screen and usb problem.

First if the company has the proper paperwork to prove ownership of the locked laptop, I would contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they can remove the lock.

Otherwise, try a DFU firmware Restore on the locked laptop.

The physical parts swap is risky due to the parts pairing used by Apple. You will definitely need to swap the Lid Angle Sensor and TouchID when you swap Logic Boards since these two items are permanently paired to the Logic Board if you want to be able to close & open the lid to sleep & wake the laptop, and to be able to use fingerprint recognition.

I have no idea if there may be any other surprises, but these are the ones I know about.

You must be extremely careful since there are a lot of very fragile cables & connectors that are easily damaged even when you take extreme care with them.

Of course you will no longer be able to go to Apple with a laptop that has been altered in this way.

Edit: The USB-C port problem may just be due to a damaged I/O Board which is easily replaced. I find they attract liquids....sometimes the contacts can be cleaned as long as the contacts have not been damaged by corrosion or an electrical short.

If you cannot get it unlocked and are not going to pay for any repairs, then it really doesn't hurt to try the swap making sure to swap the TouchID and Lid Angle Sensor if the laptop has one on the Clutch/Hinge of the Display Assembly. Just don't mix up the parts. Probably best to attach a bit of tape or easy to remove sticker on the items. What do you really have to lose at that point except a bit of time?
