When I try to download an image on my MacBook Air, it randomly freezes

Hello, everybody.

I have a problem with my MacBook downloads. Sometimes when I try to download an image on my MacBook Air my computer randomly freezes for an extended period of time before finally downloading the image. This doesn’t happen all the time but it happens enough to be noticeable. And there is nothing that I can do to fix it. It also seems to happen randomly as it isn’t the case with all my downloads, with some of my images downloading instantly. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem is? And how can I fix it?

The first thing to do is remove the files that are known to cause problems with your computer. They are grouped in these categories:

  • Cleaners
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus
  • VPN

Then remove any Extensions/Content Blockers from Safari if you are using it to download the images you are having trouble with. After that post the free Etrecheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. This will show the status of your system and highlight areas that may be contributing to the problem you are experiencing.

Update: Well y'all, I found out the reason. It's because whenever I download a new image, I tag it for easier access. When I create a new tag, the computer takes a while to download because I suppose it has to still fully process the new tag that has been created. It is not a problem at all, although it is still annoying. I do appreciate all of your help, however! Take care! 👋🏿

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by senior contributor here, and uses system calls to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the system ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

Etrecheck just runs. It pauses to allow you to input a reason why you are running it. No other choices are required, but if you want to allow Full Disk Access, it shows a little more information.. It automatically creates a report of everything it finds. It does not change ANYTHING, so it should not be scary.

The only complexity comes in clicking the SHARE Icon to SHARE the report to the System Clipboard, then clicking the "Additional text" icon in a reply footer, then PASTE-ing the report in and click (Post).

What happens when you create a new Administrator user? Does this all go away? If so, it's an issue within your current user --and not it's the entire macOS.

That is just an overview. You would need to tap the Share Report button on the top of the screen and copy to the Clipboard, then when posting here, use the Additional Text option and paste the clipboard there.

Since you are signed in as a Standard User, the results will be limited to what you have access to. If you can sign into your Administrator Account, more information will be available that will affect all users.

The low Hard Disk Space is a huge red flag when it comes to the slow downs you are experiencing. You will need to free some space up for efficient operations.
