I have old .MPG and .mp4 movies on a hard drive, how can I import them into my pictures to view them? I tried dragging them over, but it says incompatible?

Open iMovie > select File on the menu bar > click Import Media > navigate to the movies on the external drive > highlight a movie file > click Import.
