Did scammers get into my friends entire apple ID account?

This questions begs a fair bit of context and I’m asking for a friend cause we’re at our wits end and they’re embarrassed. In 2019-2021 my friend apparently fell victim to hacking/scamming and we did not find out until THIS year 2024. Messages they had never seen and photos of themselves they took and even messages sounding like them were sent to strangers through their apple messages. I’m wondering if it is at ALL possible for someone to pretend to be you, if they are at all able to have access to this much of your info without your permission or some kind of warning ? We found an email in their trusted devices/emails that they claim to not recognize. Is this how they reeked such havoc ?

Entirely possible with just the password of the Apple ID. Just like your Social Security number or Banking information, this should not be given out and unfortunately too many people think they need to provide it in a response to an email or message. Review this support article and never give it to anyone. Changing it frequently would have also prevented the scenario from going on for 5 years.

  1. Use complicated, multiple character passwords that are not easily guessed.
  2. NEVER EVER use the same password twice.
  3. Change your important account passwords on a regular schedule (like very 60 days)
  4. Don’t fall for scams or phishing attempts. If it looks too good to be true then it is definitely scam.
  5. Pay attention to emails from legitimate sources, like AT&T who recently announced a data breach affecting 73 millions current and former users. Follow the instructions provided.
