Disposing of IS X Lion - broken

I read that I can dispose my desktop at Best Buy ( this was where we purchased). However I cannot wipe it clean due to both mouse & keyboard not working. Should I be concerned that all our info is still stored ?

thanks!

An iMac running Lion is newer than the pre-2006 iMac this forum covers. Can you please do "About this Mac.." from your Apple menu and tell us the sub-model. With that we can better tell if an at-home drive extraction is a viable option.

The "About..." window looks something like this in older versions of macOS:

and the red arrow I added points to the sub-model.

Hi,

Depending on the exact Mac model, it may be easy or more difficult to open the computer in order to remove the hard drive. You could then keep or destroy the hard drive. Alternatively, use a universal bare drive USB adapter (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NV2SPATA/ is just one example). The now external hard drive connected to another Mac (or even PC, with the right software) could be read and/or erased.
