It sounds like you're encountering difficulties with the 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) process when trying to log in to your Apple ID on a virtual machine (VM) based in India. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

  1. Check Time and Date Settings: Ensure that the time and date settings on both your VM and the host machine are accurate. Incorrect time settings can sometimes cause issues with generating verification codes.
  2. Reset Apple ID Password: Try resetting your Apple ID password to see if it resolves the issue. You can do this by visiting the Apple ID account management page and following the instructions for password reset.
  3. Use Trusted Devices: If you have set up trusted devices for 2FA, try using one of them to generate the verification code instead of relying on SMS codes.
  4. Contact Apple Support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Apple Support for further assistance. They may be able to provide specific guidance or troubleshoot the issue on their end.

Additionally, since you're using a VM based in India, there may be specific restrictions or issues related to using 2FA with Apple services from that location. It's worth checking with the provider of your VM (MacInCloud) to see if they have any insights or recommendations for resolving this issue.

In the meantime, if you're unable to access your Apple ID for pushing updates to the Mac App Store, you may need to explore alternative solutions such as using a physical Mac device or contacting Apple for further assistance.

Do you not have an Apple Trusted Device on that same AppleID? It can generate a valid verification code even if offline.

Next, do you have other “local” Trusted Numbers which you might configure?

Verification codes delivered via voice call are quite reliable and not subject to the vagaries of SMS delivery.
