Restoring an iPod touch, early version 1 or 2

Hello. I tried to restore an early version of the iPod touch with my iTunes. It went through all the steps and at the very end it said air 9836 unable to complete the process. The screen went blank. iTunes showed the icon. When I click on the icon, the screen is black. I have an old iMac . iTunes has been working with my old devices. What can I do?
