Microphone limited to very low volume after update to Sonoma.

I have a 16 inch MacBook Pro (2021) with the M1 chip. Until recently I was still on Monterey, and my hardware was fully functional. A few days ago, I updated to Sonoma 14.4.1. I now find that my internal microphone is limited to very low volume, so that, for instance:

(a) I can send a voice message via WhatsApp, but the recipient hears my message as a low whisper.

(b) Attempts to use a language learning app with speech recognition online fail, with alerts asking me to speak louder.

I have tried to increase the volume via Systems Settings/Sound/Input, but that make no difference. From an internet search, I see that previous users switching to Sonoma have had problems with the internal microphone. Is there any way I can solve this problem? If not, is this a known issue, and is Apple doing anything to fix it?

I had this same issue with my 14 inch 2021 M1 chip. I was able to fix it by following this advice:

  1. Go to Applications → Utilities → Terminal
  2. Type in “sudo killall coreaudiod” and press Enter
  3. This should reset your Core Audio daemon

Try resetting your macOS audio settings or performing a system reset. Apple is aware of this issue reported by other users and may address it in future updates. Keep an eye out for any software updates that may include a fix.

Same issue here with my 13" M1 MacBook Pro with Sonoma. The command helps, but since I have daily meetings I have to execute the same command every day. I'm using MS Teams app for the meetings and wonder if it has something to do with it or it's a general issue. I have another 13" MacBook Pro with Intel Processor upgraded to Sonoma and never experienced the low mic volume issue. I guess it will be beneficial if we list the apps we use the mic with and maybe we can find a common root of the problem? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It always happens to me after using Microsoft Teams, either the browser or desktop version. Mic and speaker volume are fine but then drop to ~20% during/after an MS Teams call. I've messed with the apple and MS setting to no avail. This terminal command is super helpful because my only other solution has been rebooting after every call.

I also posted in the Microsoft community, since it's clearly an issue (for me) of what MS is doing with permissions.
