On the newer Mac, use the High Sierra link in How to download and install macOS - Apple Support to do a clean installation of High Sierra onto an external hard drive.

Transfer that external hard drive to the old Mac, and start up from it.

Now you can

  1. Clone the external High Sierra system onto the internal drive (using Disk Utility and a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper), or
  2. Do a clean install of High Sierra on the internal drive, using Safari and the Apple Support article (but this time, running on the old Mac).

Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

Or...

 Start up from macOS Recovery

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

APFS won't work for Sierra or earlier, Sierra or earlier needs MacOS Extended Journaled. High Sierra won't work for APFS on earlier Macs.
