Perhaps you intermittently locked this?

1. Go Here: Use Lost Mode in Find Devices on iCloud.com - Apple Support
2. Scroll to: Turn off Lost Mode on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch
3. Proceed rform there as necessary.

Does the screen say something like "Locked to Owner" - indicating that the phone is Activation Locked?
