Apple Pay (Do Not Honor / Temporary Hold)

My app subscription accepts web payments via Apple Pay on our website and the native payments inside our app.

Our web payments have a drastically high decline rate (>40%; up from a high 15% in September). Each month is getting worse than the previous. We have discussed this with our membership platform (Recurly) and payment processor (Stripe).

Forty five (45%) percent of our declines are temporary holds / do not honor.

Neither have a solid reason why our declines are so high.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it a way for Apple to drive more native payments?

TIA

Apple doesn’t approve or decline transactions, only the issuing bank can do that. What is the velocity of the charges? If the velocity is high, this is a sign of potential fraudulent use. They may be probing security of your systems, payment processor etc.

Another possibility is the security methods Stripe is using. If they aren’t familiar with Apple Pay, the declines could be address or BIN (Bank Identification Number) failures. You typically can’t use address and BIN verification with Apple Pay.
