Handbrake no longer has MOV as an export choice. Only MP4, MKV or WebM. The free version of VLC has more export options, but MOV is not one of them. QuickTime won't even open a WMV file.
I tried bringing a random video into the full version of DaVinci Resolve to see if it could export a MOV file. There is no option for that. That, and it wouldn't even import a WMV file.
Not that it can't be done. There are multiple free online converters.
I didn't look very hard, but I would assume there are also free and paid desktop apps to do this. Here's one, there may be others.

I am not Apple therefore " apple recommended " does not apply to the below suggestion.
Third Party Software >> Handbrake
It would be a much better idea to convert them to MP4. The only downside is quality. WMV is a lossless compression format. MP4 is lossy. How much the video is degraded depends on the bitrate (quality level) you choose.
Kind of like JPEG. A level 2 JPEG will be essentially, and obviously, destroyed. A maximum quality JPEG (level 12) is almost identical to an uncompressed TIFF.
Will have to keep that I mind
Thank you for sharing the above finding 😎
It was a good suggestion, though. I think Handbrake used to have MOV as an export choice, so I looked to be certain before saying, "Yes, it does." Only to find it's no longer there.
It remains a good catch 👍 and should help OP achieve what they want to do
Why do you need .mov? It's just a wrapper for any of many mpeg formats.
I guess I don't? I was just trying to drag a wmv video from a zillion years ago into my photos and it won't go. Just thought converting to MOV would help. Any other suggestions?
