Would like to turn OFF automatic closed captioning

I have Sonoma 14.4.1 and Safari 17.4.1. I watch a lot of tutorial videos. Every video I start playing has closed captioning already turned on, and I must deactivate it for the video. I have checked Settings, Accessibility, and Captions, and three different captioning styles exist. Each of these 'styles works, but I can't delete any of them. There is a button that is turned off called "Prefer closed captions and SDH". I don't know what SDH is. I have tried toggling this on and off, but I don't see a difference. I think it's great to have the option, but I would like to turn OFF this particular option.

Is there a way?

Hello. This is not you tube. It’s pretty much every site that has video. News sites, my school courses. Every video starts with CC turned on. I then have to turn it off. If I reload the page, it resets and turns it back on.

Gotcha. That's interesting, I'm not sure what's going on but I can offer a workaround. If you open System Preferences > Accessibility > Captions in the sidebar, then the '+' symbol, you can add a new caption style. Set both the 'Background Opacity' and 'Text Opacity' to be 'Transparent', then the 'Text Size' to be 'Extra Small'. Make sure to uncheck the 'Allow video to override' box too. It might not get rid of them, but it should produce CC that are virtually invisible, at any rate.

Are you using YouTube, and signed in? Try changing your captions settings here.
