Make sure that "Background Render" is OFF in Final Cut Pro->Settings->Playback.

Delete all render files. Select the library in the browser sidebar, and go to

Final Cut Pro->Delete Library Generated Files...

In addition to what LocaAlicia said:

Is that just with png files? Other image files - jpeg, tiff, ... don't have problems?

Are the png all from the same source? If you pick some file and save it as a png in Preview, does it also cause the same problem?

Did you delete FCP preferences? To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start in a default state, and open an "Untitled" library. Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences the way you like them, and try again.
