Netflix 4k poor quality on Apple TV 4K(2022).

Every other app on my apple tv gives a crystal clear picture via my SONIC fiber connection hardwired to it. However the netflix app gives an abysmal picture as if I was streaming 720i to my tv. It's so bad that some scenes are nearly unwatchable because of the pixelation and the blurry picture. Just on a whim I fired up my Samsung's native netflix app which is wirelessly streaming at 11mbps and the picture is GORGEOUS! To be clear every other app is sending amazing quality through every permutation of the changes I made below. the only app thats struggling is Netflix.

I did all the things below and nothing improved the quality on my netflix app. After nearly each step I restarted the apple tv.

  • Deleted and reinstalled the app
  • Changed the 4k SDR settings to multiple refresh rates from 60-30
  • changed the chroma
  • changed the dynamic range
  • changed the content mapping
  • ensured my hdmi cables were secure
  • Made sure every device was up to date.

I saw a couple of instances of others that had the same issue.

The only way to fix it is to change the frame rate and dynamic range matching. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content, then choose from the following options: Match Dynamic Range: Turn on to make Apple TV 4K match Netflix output to the original dynamic range of content and it’s fixed.

Having been fine for years Netflix HD/4k streams just became horrendous and almost made me cancel the ‘4 seat’ 4k plan.

I came across a few comments suggesting that certain DNS servers were no longer working well with it.

Paramount+, Disney, YouTube video etc absolutely perfect with sumptuous streams.

I was going to change the DNS server settings on my router, but suddenly it just worked better - I think I changed something but honestly can’t remember what which is pretty odd for me.

I’d ensured many times on the Netflix website that video stream quality was set to the best for all users and that didn’t help

I’ve been testing the actual 4K settings, and changing the fps say as I’m in Australia we use 50fps so I start my Netflix app and show, check if it’s playing with grainy poor quality picture, then I switch to settings- video and audio then format, then other formats, then use 4K 30 click ok to confirm, then I switch back to Netflix wait for my show to finish in my case 24min episode, as I want to see if next episode is grainy, if not, then I repeat steps I did in settings and choose change format back to 50 fps, so far it’s been working great, after 7 episodes, no noticeable grainy picture, this is my current workaround, not sure if it will work for the populace, but works for me right now

If uninstalling the Netflix app did not make a difference that would point the finger at your network providing adequate coverage which should not be confused with network speed. To test network coverage, use a tool such as iStumbler to check the signal strength where your Apple TV is located. Of course also remember to re-cycle the power on your modem and router too and to check for any modem & router firmware updates.
