I can't use the "Group by Time" option under the View menu

I see an option to Group by Time in the View menu, but it is grayed out when viewing any list except one of Apple's 6 included Smart Lists (Today, Scheduled, All, Assigned, Flagged, Assigned, Completed).

Anyone figure out other conditions under which we may be able to use this nice feature for lists they created?
