iMac 2012 High Sierra as monitor

Can I use my iMac 2012 High Sierra as a monitor for my Macbook pro, macOS Sonoma 2019?

I would like to connect them with Apple MMEL2ZM/A Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt and I want to be sure that it's doable before paying for the "cable plug".

That 2012 iMac would have a resolution of 1920x1080 if it is a 21.5” model, or 2560x1440 if it is a 27” model.

Given how the prices of monitors have fallen over the years, I’m not sure that it is worth putting money into something like Luna Display (Astropad) or Duet Display (a “subscription” / rental application) that could have gone towards the purchase of a decent monitor.
