Could be several things or a combination of those things.

  • Sleep sensor or Lid Angle Sensor is not working so macOS does not know you are trying to put the laptop to sleep. Try manually entering Sleep Mode by clicking the Apple menu & selecting "Sleep". Pressing any key or touching the Trackpad can wake up/power on the laptop, so be careful that you don't pull it out of sleep mode.
  • Software issue preventing macOS from sleeping.
  • iCloud or other cloud file syncing service is operating. Macs are not always fully asleep & may be doing background tasks when you think the computer should be asleep. Power Nap is not always the culprit.
  • Battery is worn out or failing. Unfortunately macOS & the Apple Diagnostics do not always identify a failing or worn out battery. If the battery condition is "Service Recommended" or the battery fails the Apple Diagnostic, then the Battery is probably a good part of the problem

Whenever you can connect the power adapter, do so. The only time the laptop should be on battery & sleeping is when you are traveling & are unable to use a charger.

FYI, the other day I ran into this problem with one of my organization's Macs. I verified that macOS was recognizing that the lid was closed so I know the Lid Angle Sensor was working, but some sort of software issue was keeping the laptop busy so the battery drained to the point the laptop went into hibernation mode overnight. I never did identify what software specifically was causing the problem although using another macOS user account, Safe Mode, and booting from a clean OS all stopped the problem. I doubt I will investigate further since it is easier for us just to perform a clean install of macOS & restore from a backup.
