Syncing iPad photos to icloud

I am about to do this, but it tells me I will lose 6,000 photos from finder. I haven’t used any other device for years, so what are these, and if I do this, can I ever get them back?

When you say you haven’t used any other device for years, did you have a Mac (or maybe a Windows PC) before you got the iPad? Did you perhaps use Finder (or iTunes) to transfer photos from that computer to the iPad back then? If so, those are the photos that will be lost if you connect the iPad to iCloud Photos, because iCloud Photos is incompatible with the Finder/iTunes "sync" (force transfer) method of copying photos and videos to iPads/iPhones.

If you do lose those photos by enabling iCloud Photos on the iPad, you can only get them back if you still have them on some other device (such as the computer from which you transferred them to the iPad back in the past).
