iCloud Photos Won't Sync

Hi, I have upgraded to iCloud+ with 50 GB of storage, however NONE of my photos will upload (total size of pictures on my phone is around 40 GB). What can be the issue? The phone keeps displaying that I don't have enough iCloud space, but that is simply not true. Thanks.
