Apple Calendar on MacBook Air won't sync to Google Calendar

I find that occasionally when I place an event on my calendar on my MacBook Air that it never syncs to my Google calendar. Why? It's only occasionally, but often enough it's frustrating. All the suggestions I find online say go to calendar>preferences (WHICH ISN'T an option). It would be nice if the "calendar" app on the MacBook Air worked with Google calendar flawlessly. This has been an issue for 3 years with me and I see a lot of other people have issues, would be nice if there was an update that addressed this issue. Please share if you know of a way to get this fixed (preferably a long term fix). Thanks!
