How do I check my iMac if I believe it could be compromised?

opened email asking to verify PayPal purchase. I don't have a PayPal account but I called the number provided. He led me through a series of steps to access a "cancellation form" but it got so involved I hung up. How can I tell whether computer was compromised?

1) Never ever call a number from an unknown e-mail sender.

2) If you did not give this person access to your Mac, then your Mac is not hacked.

3) If you did not enter any personal information into the cancellation form, then you are OK.
