Having to Constantly Resize App Windows with Sonoma Desktop Settings

I have a new MacBook Air with a small screen. Yet all of my App windows open at a smaller size than the desktop because Apple is reserving the left side of the desktop to continuously show mini-pictures of apps that are open.

How do I change my settings to hide the desktop when I open an app? How can I set apps to open and open to the full width of the screen without manually doing it with every new window that I open?
