Text message start message icon gone

Hello! I am texting and scrolling. Suddenly, the top bar that has the icon for starting a message is blank. It has dropped down and become longer. And the icon to start a message is gone. I am able to play with it and get the top bar to be narrow again, but I cannot start a new message. Any ideas?
