Does Live Voicemail work if you are away from your phone?

Hello all - I recently had a couple of people leave voicemails for me while I was away from my phone. Curiously Live Voicemail did not transcribe their calls, even though this feature is definitely switched on. Do you have to be using your phone when the call comes in for LV to work?
